Animal Kingdom's Asia - Exploring the "World", One "Land" at a Time

As we leave Africa, we enter the beautiful and mysterious land of Asia. Our first stop along the path is the Caravan Stage to see the Flights of Wonder show. Here a bird trainer will introduce you to the natural, and often humorous, behaviors of at least 20 different exotic bird species.

Deeper into Asia, we come upon the Kingdom of Anandapur and the Maharajah Jungle Trek. The signs and murals on the walls tell the story of ruins of this former hunting ground of the maharajah which was later transformed into a natural preserve. You will find many exotic animals on this path including: fruit bats, bengal tigers, komodo dragons, peafowl and many other birds.

You can take a wild ride on the Chakranadi River courtesy of the Kali River Rapids! In keeping with the conservation theme, this ride deals with illegal logging and habitat destruction. It is a river rapids ride and unlike the hit and miss of Splash Mountain, YOU WILL GET WET! You will spin and bump your way down the whitewater with waves, waterfalls and big splashes.

Also while in Asia, you can enjoy some great Pan-Asian food at Yak & Yeti Restaurant. Although located on Disney property, this restaurant is owned by Landry's restaurant group. This means they accept Landry's and Rainforest Cafe gift cards as well as the Disney Dining Plan!

Take your mountain train forwards AND backwards through the Forbidden Mountain! Can you escape the wrath of the Yeti?
Plans for Expedition Everest were announced in 2003 for the 5th anniversary celebration of Animal Kingdom. The ride had it's grand opening on April 7, 2006. Taking 3 years to complete, the ride was listed in the 2011 Guiness Book of World Records as the most expensive roller coaster in the world. Total cost reported as 100 million dollars!

Our story begins in the village of Serka Zong in the kingdom of Anandapur. We first travel through a gumba, a Himalayan shrine to the Yeti. Disney Imagineers made extensive research trips to Nepal to research the culture and belief of the yeti legend. Detailed murals and rich carvings take you through the standby queue. You will wind your way through an actual tea garden on your way to the yeti museum.

Norbu and Bob, owners of Himalayan Escapes offer us a ride through the Forbidden Mountain on our way to Everest Base Camp. As we travel through the yeti museum, we find a variety of equipment we will need for our journey and see some equipment brought back by other trekkers. But some of it appears damaged?!? More than 8000 artifacts were brought back from the Nepal trip to present in the yeti museum.

A steam train formerly used by the Anandapur Tea Company to bring harvested tea down through the mountain has been outfitted to take adventurers through the Forbidden Mountain to Mount Everest Base Camp. However, it's called "forbidden" for a reason! Expedition Everest also offers a single-rider line for thrill-seekers in a hurry, but you will miss all the great artifacts in the yeti museum.

The Yeti itself is the largest and most complex audio-animatronic built by Disney at 22 feet. It is also the topic of much disappointment as a split in the framing caused it to malfunction just months after opening. Because of the design of the mountain, Imagineers are unable to repair it without major disassembly of the substructure which we may or may not see in the future. Consequently, its operation is limited to a strobe light effect which gives the appearance of movement, earning it the nickname: Disco Yeti.

Hidden Mickeys are very abundant in Asia, especially in the murals on Maharajah Jungle Trek and Expedition Everest. If you look closely, you can find dozens. Here are just a few from hiddenmickeyguy.com: The large one is in a display case in the Everest queue line and the smaller two are murals from the Jungle Trek. Look closely at the earring and the plants.

FUN FACTS:
*The fall during Kali River Rapids is 25 feet
*6000 pounds of fur, 1000 snaps, and 250 zippers were used to build the Yeti
*Asia was the first expansion area added to Animal Kingdom
*The colorful flags above you are recreations of prayer flags, popular in Tibetan culture. They are believed to bring prosperity, long life and happiness. They are hung in specific color order to represent: earth, water, fire, cloud and sky.
*The totems in front of Expedition Everest were nand-created by real Nepalese woodcarvers.
*The Anandapur Ice Cream Truck came from Nepal with all but two of the mini murals painted on it, exactly as you see them now.
*The mammoth-sized audio-animatronic Yeti has a potential thrust, in all of its hydraulic cylinders combined, of slightly over 259.000 pounds force.

Animal Kingdom's Rafiki's Planet Watch - Exploring the "World", One "Land" at a Time!

You can leave Harambe and hop aboard the Wildlife Express Train to travel to Rafiki's Planet Watch. This scenic train ride gives you a behind-the-scenes peek at some of the animal's nighttime housing and care centers as it takes you to the heart of Animal Kingdom's conservation center.

When you arrive at Rafiki's Planet Watch, the first attraction you will find is Habitat Habit. This self-guided outdoor trail is home to exhibits on animal conservation. It will teach you ways to share the world with animals and give you an up-close look at one of the world's most endangered primates, the cotton-top tamarins.

Conservation Station is the veterinary and conservation headquarters of Animal Kingdom. This working facility is where you can meet wildlife experts and get a behind-the-scenes look at park operations. You can see the nursery, reptile center, nutrition center and more. There are also live animal stage shows and meet and greets with some of your favorite characters. Experts are on hand to answer questions and educate visitors on animal care and conservation efforts both in the park and around the world.

The Affection Section is the petting zoo. You can get up-close and personal with a variety of animals including: llamas, pigs, goats, sheep and more!

You can find many Hidden Mickeys throughout African and Rafiki's Planet Watch, too many to name. But here are just a few:
*Tusker House roster board
*Pangani Forest Exploration Trail hanging bag
*Conservation Station is full of them. Check lots of eyes
*Probably the largest Hidden Mickey in the park is Flamingo Island in Kilimanjaro Safaris.
*Check out some of the cool "haircuts" on animals at the Affection Section
*As you walk around Africa, look down at some of the utility covers in the ground
*Check out the crossbeams at the Wildlife Express Station

FUN FACTS:

  • The artist that painted the murals in Rafiki's Planet Watch painted most of the murals in Countdown to Extinction and in Grandmother Willow's Friendly Forest
  • The first birth at Animal Kingdom was a kudu, a large African antelope
  • 116 species have reproduced at Animal Kingdom park
  • Disney Animal Kingdom scientists have discovered two new vocalizations never before reported in elephants

Animal Kingdom's Africa - Exploring the "World", One "Land" at a Time

As we cross the bridge from Discovery Island, we enter Africa and the village of Harambe. Food, entertainment and some of the most exotic animals in the world await us in this small African village.

Head to the Harambe Wildlife Preserve for the most exciting attraction in Africa! Kilimanjaro Safaris take you on an 800 square mile tour of the savanna. You will ride an open-air safari vehicle where over 34 different species of African wildlife seemingly roam free. Your tour guide will provide valuable information on this 18-minute tour and slow whenever possible for great photo opportunities!

Previous versions of the safari included a scripted story of poachers invading the reserve to capture the elephant Big Red and her young child Little Red. Your vehicle (Simba 1) would cross a dangerous bridge and speed up in time to stop the poachers and save Little Red! A later version removed the danger to Little Red and had him roaming the reserve and asking us to be on the lookout for him. We still encountered a speedy poacher chase at the end. These versions have since been removed and it is now a calm, slow-paced safari with no accompanying storyline. I personally enjoyed the stories very much and found the safari just a little more boring without them. Although the story has been removed, Disney maintains that the safari still has a strong emphasis on conservation.

After your safari ends, there are still many more animals to be seen. Take a walk through the Pangani Forest Exploration Trail. Here you will get a close-up view of animals such as okapi, hippos, tropical fish, naked mole rats, meerkats and of course, the Lowland Gorillas!

If all this exploring has worked up an appetite, there are plenty of satisfying choices in Africa. You can enjoy a bountiful all-you-can-eat buffet at Tusker House Restaurant. They have many delicious food choices with African flavoring. You can also meet and greet some of your favorite characters at breakfast, lunch and dinner!

If a buffet is too much for you, there are many other choices in Africa. Stop in for a relaxing specialty cocktail at the Dawa Bar. Enjoy some cool drinks and fresh fruit at the Harambe Fruit Market. Enjoy something hot or sweet at Kusafiri Coffee Shop and Bakery. Or, grab a sandwich or salad at Tamu Tamu Refreshments.

You can also now visit the newly-opened Harambe Market. The market is made up of four quick service windows. They include: Kitamu Grill, Famous Sausages, Chef Mwanga's, and Wanjohi Refreshments. Each offers a variety of African inspired dishes. The area also includes 220 seats with viewing of the live entertainment at the Harambe platform. The space also opens up to a new pathway to Bradley Falls and the Asia section. (photo credit: Orlando Sentinel)

At its new home in Africa's Harambe Theater, take a break from the heat to enjoy Festival of the Lion King. Currently the longest running attraction in Animal Kingdom, this spectacular stage show features puppets, stilt-walkers, acrobats and singers. The interactive performance puts the audience in the fun, breaking them into four animal groups. Will you be a giraffe, warthog, elephant or lion? Join Simba, Timon and Pumbaa for this bigger-than-Broadway show!

FUN FACTS:

**50 Cast Members perform at Festival of the Lion King
**The only live baobab tree in Africa stands outside Tusker House restaurant
**Gift shops in Africa have fake business licenses with the official seal of Harambe
**The largest tree replanted in the park is located in Harambe Village. It tips the scales at 90 tons
**Kilimanjaro Safaris covers over 110 acres
**Harambe Village is based on the Kenyan town of Lamu

Animal Kingdom's Oasis/Discovery Island - Exploring the "World", one "Land" at a time!

With over 40 square miles of magic, Walt Disney World can seem overwhelming. Even frequent visitors can have a hard time "doing it all". It's been more than 2 years since we last explored the resort and, as we know, WDW is ever-changing. The 4 major parks are each broken down into several "lands". So, we will explore Walt Disney "World", one "Land" at a time, featuring all the attractions each land has to offer. We will visit the well-known favorites along with the hidden gems you may have missed and hopefully, discover some new magic to add to your next trip.

We'll begin our tour with WDW's "newest" park. Disney's Animal Kingdom opened on April 22, 1998. It's the largest Disney park in the world, covering 500 acres. The park is themed entirely on animal conservation.

Disney's Animal Kingdom starts your day off right with a fun rope drop welcome by your favorite Disney pals. The Fab 5 will roll in to welcome you and get you ready for your safari adventure!

Accessible from inside or outside Animal Kingdom is Rainforest Cafe. You will be surrounded with the sights and sounds of the jungle as you enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner. Although it is not a Disney-owned restaurant, they do participate in the Disney Dining Plan. They also accept Landry company gift cards which you can get in advance, sometimes at a discount or for free through participation in some online programs. They also have their own gift shop with a large variety of merchandise.

Upon entering Animal Kingdom, you will first pass through the Oasis exhibits. These shady trails provide lush foliage, gentle waterfalls and amazing wildlife. Among the animals you will find here are the Giant Anteater, Exotic Boar, Spoonbill and more.

As you explore the foliage around the Oasis, something may just catch your eye. Did that vine just move?!? If so, then you may have found DiVine. This stilt-walking performer is covered in beautiful foliage to blend in with the surroundings and is truly a marvel! You may also find her on the pathway between Africa and Asia.

At the center of Discovery Island stands the majestic icon of Disney's Animal Kingdom: the Tree of Life. This larger than life tree stands 145 tall and 50 feet wide. It is adorned with more than 103,000 individually placed leaves. The trunk contains carvings of over 325 animals which can be viewed from different areas as you travel through the Tree of Life Garden and Discovery Island Trails. The interior of the structure was crafted using an oil rig which was strong enough to endure Florida's hurricane weather and provide a base large enough to house a theater. A recent expansion includes 11 new                                                                   animal carvings to the tree!

New for 2015, is the addition of Winged Encounters, the Kingdom Takes Flight. This 3 to 8 minute show at the new performance area in front of Tree of Life focuses on the macaws and conservation.

Another new attraction currently in the works will be the new night-time show, Rivers of Light. This show, featuring live music, floating lanterns, water screens and swirling animal imagery, will be hosted around Discovery River. This change will also involve replacing the leaves on the Tree of Life with new ones that light up. Planned opening for this attraction is Spring of 2016.

Follow the Discovery Island trails in and around the Tree of Life. Not only can you get a close-up view of the wonderful carvings on the tree, but there are also many live animals to spot along these trails as well!! Just some of the live animals you will find here include: Greater Flamingo, Red Kangaroo, Galapagos Tortoise, Ring-tailed Lemur and much more!

Deep beneath the roots of the Tree of Life is It's Tough to Be a Bug! This 9-minute 3D show feature sights, smells, touch and even appearances by some characters of A Bug's Life. The most exciting part of the show is an appearance by Hopper. Hopper is an 8-foot tall audio animatronic figure and one of the most complex in all the parks. Since he brings some loud chaos with him, he may be a bit scary to younger audience members. But a chameleon soon puts him in his place and all's well that ends well.

Discovery Island is also home to two great little restaurants. Pizzafari for pizza and sandwiches plus unique specialties. And Flame Tree BBQ (recently reopened after a long refurbishment) for freshly smoked barbequed meats and salads! Another part of the Animal Kingdom expansion will include a yet-to-be-named table service restaurant which will be taking over at least part of the Pizzafari dining area.

Also new for 2015 is the opening of the 4th in-park Starbucks location in the former Creature Comforts shop. This location will also be serving grab and go breakfast items during morning operating hours.

Since the closure of Camp Minnie Mickey to make way for the new Avatar Land, you can now meet Mickey and Minnie in their exploration headquarters at Adventurer's Outpost.

Follow in the footsteps of Russell and Dug as you become a Wilderness Explorer! Complete challenges and earn badges as you work your way around the park. Pick up your official field guide at headquarters to begin! You can also find additional starting points in other lands throughout the park.

If you are a Hidden Mickey hunter, there are quite a few to find in this area. Pictured here (from HiddenMickeyGuy.com) is a fire hydrant near Pizzafari. Here are clues to a few more: Inside Pizzafari, look at the animal drawings on the walls. Look at the bat's noses and fireflies wings. Inside Flame Tree BBQ, look for a drawing of two rhinos. If you are seeing It's Tough to Be a Bug, look just above the handicap entrance before you enter. On the Tree of Life, try to find a Hidden Mickey made of green moss. Look near the buffalo!

FUN FACTS

  • Have you ever noticed the red and green pathways as you head to the entrance? Google Earth to see it or just look at your park map. It's the Tree of Life in pavement!
  • All benches in Animal Kingdom are made from recycled milk jugs.
  • The official greeting of Discovery Island is Viva Gaia, which means live long, Mother Earth.
  • Renowned authority Jane Goodall was invited for a preview of the Tree of Life and it was noticed that chimpanzees were overlooked. So a carving of the chimp she named David Graybeard was added. He is the only named animal on the Tree of Life.
  • Every room in Pizzafari has it's own theme. Check out the upside-down room.
